Billy the Kid is very clearly a major step forward for the Horstmann_Wiedmann_Daneck Trio, and we listeners – and particularly those who care about the expanding possibilities of improvised music– are fortunate to have this freeze-frame record of an important moment in this trio’s ongoing evolution.

Ein Rundgang durch Clubveranstaltungen am Rande der Stuttgarter Jazz Open.
Vor dem Schaufenster huschen auf der Charlottenstraße die Autos vorbei. Drinnen, im Laden von Buch Julius, singen die Gitarren von Thomas Horstmann und Martin Wiedmann mit kantig scharfen, rauhen Tönen zu den harten Rhythmen des Schlagzeugers Matthias Daneck das Lied von der Großstadt. Die Musik des Trios aber pulsiert, als gälte es, die Alltagshektik in Klänge zu fassen. Dabei übernimmt stets einer der Gitarristen die Grundierung, während der andere zu skurrilen, oft an wunderbaren Brüchen reichen Soli aufbricht. Rasche Kürzel fliegen Schlagworten gleich durch die Luft. Sie werden aufgefangen, zurückgefedert, von nervösen Schlägen auf Becken und Trommeln aufgeheizt.
